Mining

Walter Dow has been actively involved in the mining industry in Canada and abroad. Often we have been called upon to design the complete layout of all facilities, including underground, hoisting, concentrator and townsite applications. We have evaluated existing electrical systems including power plants, planned generating plants for prime or standby power, co-ordinated relay systems, specified transformer stations and laid out incoming supply lines up to 230 kV. Clients have asked us to do feasibility studies, preliminary design concepts, cost estimates, installation and equipment specifications, detailed drawings, and field supervision and commissioning.

We have been particularly involved with mine hoists and our experience includes hoist specifications, estimates, detailed installation drawings and evaluations of existing systems. We are quite familiar with wound rotor drives, Ward Leonard drives, and thyristor drives on friction hoists and drum hoists.
